(Re)Animations: 3-South (2002)

Adventures in college freshmen tomfoolery.

MTV is kind of like the creative boiling pot for cartoons that often die before their time. Aside from a few late-night 90s sleeper hits such as Beavis & Butt-Head, Liquid Television and The Maxx, the channel hasn't had much success with animated television. The one exception that I can think of would be Daria, who really seemed to capture the tween and teen angst-ridden audience during its run (myself included).

I suppose that just like any other large studio, the MTV execs figured that they could apply the same basic formula of teenage social outcasts to any animated series and expect it to get the same results. Among this inbred ilk, Three South is among the shortest-lived series with only 11 episodes of a total 13 making it to air. The show itself was a strange brew of Daria's social cynicism, Revenge of the Nerds and the 1995 film Angus.

Never rising above its predecessors, Three South was swiftly shelved on sister station MTV2 before finally given the axe in 2003. Fans of Superbad! might take note of the series as it shares the same spirit of adolescent rebellion against the idiotic tyrants of society, but after watching a few episodes online for the sake of nostalgia you won't necessarily find yourself asking for a comeback.

I really liked this show when it came out. Granted, I was in college at the time which probably has something to do with that. I think it's time to hunt down the series for a re-watch.

It's definitely one of those shows that aims at more specific audience. I watched two or three episodes when I was doing research and there's still a few funny moments to the series.

If only I could track down more episodes of Liquid Television, now that was some quality animation!

And you posted my favorite, where Sanford is loathing a guy he doesn't realize is his exact double. XD Though there was one I liked called "Head Trip", which sadly didn't last long, but comments during videos and celebrities' heads on badly drawn bodies was good watchin'. Except the sheep of America would rather watch crap like "Undressed". :(

@ThinkBaker: Nice to see you hanging around the clubhouse, Baker.

What I want to know is when MTV is going to get a clue and release Liquid TV on DVD? I've seen bootlegs, but I wanted extras, deleted scenes, high-quality...

    *sigh*

The Maxx and The Head were both great series, especially the later. Just the right combination of WTF?! and awesome sauce to make it work.
