Preview 'Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale'

Tired of watching A Christmas Story ad nauseum every year on TBS? Well if you're lucky enough to live anywhere near New York, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, Boston, Kansas City or any of the other theaters listed here than you're in luck! Those are the cities that will be premiering director Jalmari Helander's latest feature film, Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale.

Based on a series of short films by Helander, Rare Exports Inc. (see above) and Rare Exports: The Official Safety Instructions, this feature length adaptation finds a band of Finland archeologists who inadvertently discover the "real" Santa Claus, a terrifyingly real (and most likely rabid) representation of 'ole Saint Nick. Unearthed by a reindeer hunter and his young son while searching for the cause behind a recent string of missing children, Santa doesn't take to kindly to being held captive and before long his elves come looking for him... and they ain't too jolly either.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale opens at the IFC Center in New York on December 3, 2010 courtesy of Oscilloscope Laboratories. Be sure to check out the original short film above for a taste of what I can only imagine Helander has in store for theater-goers next Friday.

I saw a trailer for this a few weeks back. I'm really looking forward to it. Even if I have to wait till it's released on video, I will see this flick. I wonder if you've heard about "SINT," a Dutch slasher flick about an evil Father Christmas. This harkens back to the days of "Silent Night, Deadly Night," and "Black Christmas."
I like the blog. Keep up the good work, guys!

Thanks, Johnny, really appreciate the kind words about the site.

I haven't heard of SINT, but I just caught the trailer on YouTube and... dear lord, I believe I shat myself with excitement! Very, very cool.

If I could just catch SINT and Rare Exports it would be a very, merry Christmas indeed.

This is amazing! I'm hoping to catch this when it comes through LA. I love Christmas Story, but this looks like a fine new treat. SINT also looks like a fiendish morsel of Slashmas!

Unfortunately, I am not near a screening because I would see this in a heartbeat. It looks fantastic.

Now, I have to also check out SINT.

The closest screening for Rare Exports to me is in Mobile which is a little over 2 hours away. :(

As luck would have it, though, I might be getting a screener copy to review for Bloodysprayer.com and you can bet I'll be sharing whatever info I can get here as well.
