Geek Shriek: House of the Wolfman on DVD September 28!

Have I mentioned yet just how excited I am for October this year?! Not to mention the fact that the summer heat is finally tapering off and the nights are growing longer, but a slew of awesome DVDs, video games and other assorted treats are slated to drop into stores as well. One film in particular that is of special note is House of the Wolfman, an indie effort by writer/director Eben McGarr starring a slew of relatively unknown actors (to me at least) including Ron Chaney.

First released in 2009 at only a few theaters, House of the Wolfman could well be considered a "cinéma vérité" of classic 30's Universal Studio horror film-making. Shot in black and white with a cast of monsters that rivals the other "House of..." films, the film follows
Dr. Bela Reinhardt (Chaney) and the five guests he has invited to his castle to see which one will inherit his estate. He has arranged for a competition of sorts, and the victor shall be determined through a process of elimination. But it quickly becomes apparent to the five unwitting visitors that danger lurks in every corner, and that the House of the Wolf man holds a secret that could drive anyone to insanity!
Despite mixed reviews regarding the acting, the monsters look amazing as does the cinematography (granted my observations are based soley on the merit of the trailer). Regardless, I've been anxiously awaiting an official release of this title for well over a year and to finally have a chance to see the film myself has definitely got my bones jangling.

  1. I haven't been this excited since I had the pleasure of sharing Night of the Demons 2 with you. You can't PRETEND to hide the kind of excitement that comes with watching a nun's head regenerate! We MUST see this movie together. Bad acting or not, the atmosphere is spot on and the makeup is making me quiver! Why aren't more directors making movies like this?! I do believe it's time to bring back the "HOUSE OF..." movies. This one seems like a beautiful start. Thanks for posting!

  1. From what I could see on the trailer there, this looks pretty cool. I'd love to check this flick out.

I've been wanting to check this one out myself for awhile. But to knock the acting for the style of film they are copying seems a little silly to me.

@Awkward Posture: Haha, man-o-man... Night of the Demons 2, where art thou? That was a pretty fun film, even if it wasn't able to capture all of the magic from the first one. As for House of the Wolfman, I've been looking forward to it for (literally) almost a year now. The costume design alone in the trailer and promo photos is beyond really anything Hollywood has done recently.

@Fiji Mermaid: I'm excited for it's release and you can be sure there will be a review of it once I get my grubby little hands on it.

@Planet of Terror: It does seem a little silly when compared to current standards, but as long as they play it more like "House of Frankenstein" and not "Abbott and Costello meets Frankenstein" I'm all in!

Agreed. I'm all for this movie and I've been looking forward to it since first hearing about it hitting film festivals last year but I want it somewhat serious (by 1930s standards) like Son of Frankenstein or House of Frankenstein. I'm not a huge fan of the monster comedies like Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein.

@Paxton: I order my copy this past Tuesday, so I'm hoping to get it sometime next week and then the review will soon follow. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, that for sure. This has been one of the pre-planned anchors of my October festivities.
