Are 'The Walking Dead' Selling Out?

I'm probably going to be lambasted for saying this, but does anyone else feel as though AMC is milking its latest hit series a little too hard? Don't get me wrong, I've enjoyed every episode of the series thus far and thought the finale was fantastic, but when was the last time you EVER saw a commercial for a Season 1 pre-sale for show before its finale has concluded?! That's an ad for a product that won't be released until March 8, 2011. March 8, 2011!

I'm sure you've heard by now that the show will make its return for another season, amidst a writer shakeup that sent the internet a buzz last week or so ago.We know the show is a hit with viewers (both horror fans and mainstream audiences), but is it really that necessary to pimp it out quite so hard. Sure, maybe its simply because of the holiday season, but if the Blu-Ray/DVD doesn't even come out until March how great of a gift is a pre-order- really?

What say you, are The Walking Dead selling out?

Splatterhouse Update: New Footage, Screenshots and Soundtrack Announced

Well, even despite a new launch date there's still apparently plenty of Splatterhouse news floating around the net as Namco has released not only some new screenshots, but some new footage (see above) AND there will also be a mobile tie-in game released in conjunction with the PS3 and Xbox 350 versions.

Essentially a port of the original TurboGrafx-16 game, IntoMobile reports that "Just like the original Splatterhouse from the late 80s, the game is a side-scrolling beat-em-up where you control Rick who has been resurrected by the Terror Mask which makes him a huge hulking monster. Rick is trapped inside the mansion of Dr. West and he needs to fight his way out."

Also announced was the tracklistings for the game's soundtrack which brings together a hell-raising assortment of heavy metal favorites to set the right mood for spilling some demon blood. Continuing reading after the jump for full track lisiting.

Adam Sandler's 'Halloween' Song

Despite his hit or miss record as a box office superstar, I've always respected Adam Sandler's self awareness not to mention his underrated musical talents. Though its been some time since he's released a worthwhile album (What's Your Name?), I do still enjoy combing through the archives for a listen to such comedy classics as "Red Hooded Sweatshirt" or "Dip Doodle." Little did I realize, however, that "The Chanukah Song" was not his only holiday-themed jam.

Granted, while Sandler's sense of humor can be an acquired taste (see Adam Sandler's Cheap Halloween Costume Advice), his music is normally spot on and "Halloween" from his 1996 live performance on HBO is an demonstration of how the actor can merge horror and comedy together. It even yields a surprise guest appearance at the end. Speaking of which, did anyone ever see his Scary Madision's The Shortcut?

Blood Sprayer announces it's newest member... ME!

So the official announcement was made earlier this morning by the ever enjoyable Kristy Jett, but I figured that it would appropriate to make my own announcement to my fellow clubhouse members here as well. Seems as though yours truly has been recruited as part of the team over at Blood Sprayer! As the hub for few of my personal favorite writers in the horror blogging community I am honored and blown over to have this opportunity to contribute to the site with my own trademark brand of "strangeness." Woo-hoo!

For those of you saying: "Well, what about Strange Kids Club?!" Fear not. Strange Kids Club will remain my full-time, top priority. I'm even hoping to get some more contributors here as well so that SKC can really feel like a community. Of course, we've also got a new recruit of our own that you may have been seeing glimpses of on Facebook who will be arriving ever so soon. That's all I'll say on that, but rest assured that SKC isn't going anywhere... it's only spreading "the strange" around a bit.

NEW Monster Cereals and Halloween Decor

Velcome to my par-lor.

This past weekend my girlfriend, our daughter and I went shopping for, among science projects and groceries, Halloween decorations. Having visited a number of stores over the past week or so I must admit to being a bit let down by the lack of emphasis for the holiday on store shelves. This weekend's excursion, however, has greatly lifted my spirits (pun totally intended) and we even snagged a few, cool goodies that I'll be rolling out as the Halloween Countdown continues.

Living from apartment to apartment for the past few years, we don't really have a lot of nice decorations to spread around the house so the television has become somewhat of a central point of decor activity (see above). I like to think of it as the shrine at which I worship the celluloid monster gods or yesteryear. This year we've added some new table trinkets including a large skull candle that bleeds out of its eyes after a certain point (see insert) and some neat mini light-up jack 'o' lanterns.

'The Walking Dead' Opening Credits (Awesome Fan-Made Short)

It was an almost bittersweet discovery this afternoon when I heard about this slick fan-made title sequence for the upcoming tv series The Walking Dead, based on the comic series. I mean, everything from how the comic book art was used to the moody, dust-bitten song "Fresh Blood" by The Eels that plays in the background is spot on to what I would have expected from the actual show.

In the words of the animator himself, Daniel M. Kanemoto, the sequence was animated "using artwork ripped from the pages of the comic, originally illustrated by Charlie Adlard and Tony Moore" and was done entirely "on spec"- in other words for free. Major props to Daniel on this piece of work, AMC should definitely throw a bone his way for generating some additional buzz on what's already looking to be a prime time juggernaut this Halloween.

The Walking Dead premieres on October 31st on AMC.

Geek Shriek: Hatchet II Red Band Trailer [NSFW]!

So it would seem that the new trend in horror films is to be gorier and more "uncensored" than the last. How any film could possibly be any more risque within a theatrical venue than director Alexandre Aja's latest Piranha remake is beyond me, but if there is one film that has a chance it would be Hatchet II.

Having proven himself both fan of the genre as well as an competent filmmaker, Adam Green possess all the necessary grit and vinegar to bring movie audiences one hell of a blood-splattered thrill ride and this first red band trailer does little to shake my confidence. Touching on all the right pressure points, Hatchet II seems to be exactly the kind of horror genre throwback that fans have been clamoring for without the need to remake the boogeymen of our childhood nightmares so that the overly glossy teen market can be offered admittance. Granted, they're sure to sneak in anyway but at least when they get there, in the darkness of the theater, they'll know what nightmares await them in their sleep.

Geek Shriek: A New Look for Capcom's 'Devil May Cry'

Apparently, Marvel's Daredevil isn't the only "Devil" being ousted from his own title. Announced at Capcom's latest Tokyo Games Show in Japan, UK-based game studio Ninja Theory (Heavenly Sword) will be helming a reboot of the Devil May Cry franchise with what appears to be a completely overhauled visual look to the game and, in particular, it's protagonist (who at this point I can only speculate to be Dante).

Labeled DMC: Devil May Cry, the only information that has been released so far is this teaser trailer and an assortment of screenshots (see below), both showing a much younger, darker haired (anti)hero who looks as though he's dripping in teenage angst (not to mention demonic puppets). Interestingly enough, the trailer almost makes it seem as if the new Dante is either hallucinating or has been imprisoned. There's also a new weapon of sorts in the form a versatile sword/whip "thing." The one thing that hasn't changed? There's still plenty of high-octane action and bad-ass attitude.

Geek Shriek: Brain Dead (2008)

A mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Perhaps it's a bit of the "nostalgia factor" getting me juiced for this October's Night of the Demons remake on DVD (Oct.19), but after seeing this teaser trailer for one of original Night of the Demons director's (Kevin Tenney) more recent schlock-fests, Brain Dead, I'm more than a little excited to get my hands on it when it's also released on DVD in October (Oct. 5).

Originally released back in 2007, Brain Dead's plot is a throwback to what I can only describe as The Deadly Spawn meets Evil Dead with
six people caught in the unusual (except in horror films) predicament of being stranded in a deserted fishing lodge with a host of alien-infected, mutant amoeba-controlled zombies at their doorstep.
The splatter effects on the teaser alone are enough to peak my interest, though its important to note that (IMO) Tenney's films have never been popular due to their threadbare plots or poor dialogue. To his credit, Tenney has never let things like that hold him down and Brain Dead looks just as entertainingly mindless as its title makes it sound. The only question that remains is whether or not this indie gore whore is worth the $24.99 toe tag.

Sneak Freak: Dylan Dog (Dead of Night) Trailer!

Every Dog has his Night.

I'll be honest... I'm not 100% how I feel about this film yet. On the one hand, I loved Dellamorte Dellamore (aka Cemetary Man) and how insane that film was, due in no small part to Gnaghi's unhealthy obsession with a girl's disembodied head. Knowing how awesome that film was, and how much better it might have been with a slightly larger budget, I've eagerly anticipated the arrival of this more faithful adaptation of the Dylan Dog universe.

However, after seeing the trailer above (which seemingly has been pulled virtually everywhere off the 'net) I can't help escape the feeling that it's nothing more than a larger scale version of Joss Whedon's Buffy-verse. Granted the film has yet to wrap post-production, but everything from the monsters to the acting just screams Buffy, Xander, Giles and even "The Master" from Season One. Even if these concepts due pre-date Whedon's creations, the execution stills comes off as derivative of the aforementioned vampire slayer.

Marcus (the zombie played by actor Sam Huntington) does an admirable job of portraying Dylan's (Brandon Routh) comical sidekick, but he's no Gnaghi. And Taye Diggs as the major villain? Seriously?

The Autumn Society presents 3G: Gremlines, Goonies and Ghostbusters!

Since I've already done a write-up on this event over at my other (illustration-centric) blogging destination, Fuel Your Illustration, I don't want to regurgitate too much of what I wrote there. However, today marks the premiere of The Autumn Society's 3G opening reception and I felt that they Joseph Game (aka Chogrin) and the rest of the unbelievably talented artists who contributed to the show deserved a shout-out here at the clubhouse.

After all, the subject matter of this show is quintessential strange kid scripture: Gremlins, The Goonies and The Ghostbusters. Highlights of the opening include a life-size replica of Ecto-1, a "real" Ghostbuster, Mattel merchandising and the chance to see a virtual smorgasbord of nerdgasm-inducing artistic goodness. Check out the Fuel Your Illustration link for more info on the when and where of the event and definitely be sure to check out The Autumn Society site for tons of artwork, announcements and bonus goodies!

Geek Shriek: Romero De-Constructed

Kick-ass artist and clubhouse contributor (Granny Grimm's Ghoulish Book of Grammar) recently had an article go up over at design hub, VectorTuts+ that breaks down his rather incredible logo treatment for friend and fellow blogger Johnny Boots' epic Romero Week blogathon back this past May.

In the article, Nik breaks down his process for creating the logo step-by-step so you can either follow along or... make one of your very own! Unfortunately, it seems that the source files are available to members of the site only. Still, it's pretty cool to see "behind the curtain" at how he crafted such an appropriately gruesome homage to both Romero and zombie films in general. I also enjoyed how the logo evolved as the event progressed, so I've included a snapshot of the "before" and "after" logos to show how it changed.

Show and Tell: Strange Kid Meets Piranha!

I have to admit that while Strange Kids Club is a labor of love, it's always nice when a reader (old or new) takes the time to reciprocate all the hard effort and sweat equity that goes with the territory of running such an all-inclusive and regularly updated blog. That's why when club member, illustrator and close friend Elliott McHugh sent over this awesome piece of fanart inspired by the recent review of Piranha 3D review my head just nearly exploded. Everything from the retro degraded coloring to the swimsuit and beyond are spot on to the core of what Strange Kid represents. This one is definitely going on the Wall of FArts (fan-constructed artworks).

Have any fanart of your own to share? Send it on over and you could be featured on the Wall of FArts yourself!

The Secrets Out! I've Been Disassembled by an Atomic Fox!

Luckily, thanks to the wonders of science, I was able to put (most) of my atoms back together.

So yeah, Carla Shoup from Atomic Fox was awesome enough to ask for an interview with yours truly and seeing as how Carla has been an avid evangelist of the Clubhouse for some I said "Hell yeah!"

Read my talk about myself at length as I reveal why this Halloween will be Phan-riffic, discuss the bureaucracy of Pinhead's cruelty and theorize on my ultimate death scenario (hint: it involves implosions and fiery white lights of flatulence). Interested yet? ...why the hell not?! Well, if you change your mind, be sure to pay Carla a visit over here and show a fellow fright fan some love.

Geek Shriek: New 'Night of the Demons' Trailer (NSFW)

Did I really just see that?

In a definitively not-safe-for-work trailer release, Bloody-Disgusting has apparently premiered the official trailer for the upcoming Night of the Demons remake and its causing quite a stir. Personally I find the footage to be tasteless, gory and exploitative... in other words I love!

In the trailer, there's a great many things for fellow horrorhounds to drool over, not the least of which is not one but TWO topless scenes (though they're quick cuts of course). One in particular features actress Diora Baird recreating the infamous "lipstick" scene in which... well, you know. Unfortunately the ensuing buzz generated has already stirred up a hornet's nest provoking Baird to clarify via Twitter that:
Due to some of your comments, let me make this clear. In the trailer for, well, lets just call it 'Film by idiot f*ck heads," I am NOT naked. That is NOT me. Nor do I get naked in the movie. What you see is just a prosthetic piece. In the movie, that is obvious.
While I can certainly understand her frustration with overbearing fans and lude commentary, I do find it strange how she refers to the film's creators which indicates some friction perhaps(?). I guess we'll have to wait until October to see it for ourselves, but until then will someone please tell them to change that God awful Photoshop-dropout cover art? I implore you.

Splatter Sighting: New Retro Trailer Released PLUS B-Roll Gameplay Footage!

It would seem that the new footage mentioned in our previous Splatter Sighting earlier this week has made its way to the surface with a triple creature feature of new footage including the premiere of some of the game's classic boss battles! In the retro trailer (see above) we can see glimpses of Biggy Man, Mirror Rick and a giant fetus all of which have been inspired by previous installments of the franchise.

BUT WAIT! There's even more gross goodness after the jump with both 3D and 2D inspired gameplay that really reinvigorates the previous games in the series, most important being enemies that fly at the screen when you slap their heads with a trusty 2x4 à la the original TMNT Arcade game (remember that boss battle with Shredder? You bet you do.).

Also be sure to check out West Mansion for a smorgasbord of new screenshots and stay tuned for more Splatter Sightings as they happen!

Splatter Sighting: Splatterhouse Microsite Revealed!

Little did I know that this year's Comic Con had yet another Splatterhouse-themed treat in store for fans aside from this phenomenal new poster by artist Dave Wilkins (seen here). As reported by West Mansion on August 4th, it seems that the marketing team at Namco are going all out with a special edition Splatterhouse t-shirt that was made available to select fans at the Con.

Evidently, each shirt came with a note which leads to a "secret" microsite touting the new game's various contests and social media profiles. The big attraction, however, seems to be the fact owners of the shirts can hold it up to their webcams and reveal a ham-sized fist exploding from their chest cavity (see insert) a la Alien. As the site explains:
A large shipment of t-shirts mistakenly shipped to the West Mansion. According to recent reports and sightings, these t-shirts were tampered with by the evil Dr. West.

If you own or have received a Splatterhouse t-shirt we recommend testing to see if your shirt has been infused with necro from his laboratory.
Pretty wicked if you ask me, but what's up with the exclusivity? While the microsite promotes pre-orders, shoes and the t-shirt none of these items are actually available which, quite honestly, bums me out a little. Especially when there's a big button that says "Get a T-Shirt" only to reveal an incomplete schedule of conventions and events where the tshirt will appear. Hell, I'd be willing to shell out my hard-earned cash for even a glimmer of such swag!

Have you heard...?

It's a party and everyone is invited!!

In lieu of another post today, I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their taking the time to wish me an awesome birthday today on Facebook. This has most definitely been one of the most kick-ass birthdays I've had in years and its in no small part to all of you. In particular I'd like to thank my partner in crime, Lesa, and our lovely daughter, Amber, who were sweet enough to snag me copies of Phantasm II and Tales from the Darkside: Season 1 (reviews will be forthingcoming, haha). A special shout-out also goes out to Jon David Guerra for his "re-interpretation" of that classic Creepshow image from Father's Day in which yours truly has been handed his last desserts by Strange Kid.

Today also marks the beginning of A Month of Rue Morgue which kicks off with Rue Morgue #103 (see insert) and the inclusion of this very blog in their Roadkill section. I haven't had the chance to actually see the issue as of yet, but I'm really psyched for this little slice of strange to have been chosen. In addition we'll also have an exclusive interview with Art Director and Painter Gary Pullin PLUS yet another Gruesome Giveaway that will see one lucky winner walk away with a 1-Year Subscription of Rue Morgue (more details to follow)!

So in summation...
  1. Thanks again for being so cool
  2. Stay tuned to win FREE SWAG
  3. Run out and buy Rue Morgue #103 today
  4. Prepare for yet another 365 days of mind-blowingly freaky, geeky or otherwise kick-ass strangeness!!!

Geek Shriek: Super Mario Bros.... ZOMBIES!

Yes, it's true I'm afraid. Seems our pudgy, Italian plumber hero Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom roadies have been infected by a nasty stream of 2-4-5 Trioxin courtesy of photographer mrksaari.

Seriously, how kick-ass of a game would that make? A mash-up of Resident Evil-style gameplay with the cast of Super Mario World... think about it. The closest thing we've seen thus far has been Luigi's Mansion. Ugh.

Also on display is this grotesquely appropriate "1-Down Mushroom" (see insert) by a fella called Undead Ed over at DeviantArt. If this is the kind of stuff the chefs are serving up around the Mushroom Kingdom, it's no wonder Mario and his pals are looking so ravenous.
